Campaign Dresser Makeover!

I am so excited to share this post today!! It's been a few weeks in the making but if you follow me on Instagram you've already recieved a few sneak peaks!

So almost two weeks ago, while browsing Craigslist for "dressers" I stumbled upon this campaign dresser! (Sorry...I had already removed some hardware when I took this pic!)
Of course, no where in the listing did it call it a campaign dresser, it was more like "old dresser" and it included some blurry pictures and here's the kicker....it was listed for just $20!! I responded to the ad and told her I lived in the same city she did and that I could pick it up ASAP! Of course, I don't have a truck, so I recruited a friend to help me pick it up and soon it was all mine! I let it sit for a few days as I researched ideas on what color to paint it. There were so many gorgeous examples in coral, green, mint, red, raspberry, black and white! It was a tough decision, but once it was made, I got to work!!

First here's a closer look at the condition of it...it had lots of tape residue on every single drawer, tops and even on the sides but that was nothing a little Goo Gone couldn't get rid of!
Once it was clean, I gently pried off the hardware - some pieces came off more easily than others but as soon I was able to jimmy the screwdriver into a corner, the whole thing popped right off without any issues.
I decided to primer and paint it with the "real" stuff vs spray paint so I picked up a small quart of Zinsser Cover Stain. I read that it's one of the best so I thought I'd give it a try. I also used a disposal foam brush to apply the two coats (yes...two coats of primer!) Again...a tip I read suggested two so I went with it.

I was really pleased with the way it covered. Once dry, it was time for some color!! I opted for a nice deep blue called "Wrought Iron" by Martha Stewart. Ooh la la!
I really love the color! It covered so nicely and 3 coats later I was done! It's kind of funny to look at the dresser without the drawers and especially without the hardware.
It's such a simple frame but it's completely transformed once the hardware is added. I cleaned the hardware to remove the dirt but decided to spray them in a gold metallic.

So are you ready for the after?? I'm just giddy over how it turned out!

I styled it with a tray, some fresh flowers, a few books, my gold "R" and a white lamp.
I just love the way the gold hardware pops against the blue!

And just for the heck of it, here's the before one more time...
And the after...

Don't you just love Craigslist??

  6. Hi Rachel - I was the second in line to buy this dresser from you (after the amazing transformation) and I'm still so sad that I didn't get it :( next time you sell a campaign dresser, skip craigslist and just look me up!

    1. Oh Caroline....I'm so sorry you didn't get it! But I'm so excited you found my blog :-)

This was the very first one I found...and of course, I snatched it up! If I find another, I will definitely email you first!! A friend of mine is also into re-doing furniture so I'll check with her, too!

      Thanks again!

  7. Do you have any tips for how you spray painted the hardware? I have a similar dresser but not sure how to get the nooks and crannies of the handles sprayed evenly.

    1. Hi Aimee,

I'm sorry for not responding sooner! I must have missed the notification of your comment! Sorry! You may have already finished your dresser, but in case you haven't...all I did was lay the hardware flat and then lifted the handle part (it was sturdy enough that it stayed up) and sprayed it like that first. When that dried completely, I put the handles back down and sprayed it again. I repeated that process one more time and was done :-)

  8. I would love some advice for the hardware as well. I just purchased a campaign dresser and desk but the hardware is silver and I would love to spray it gold but I am worried how it will hold up over time. Any advice on what you did and if it has held up?

    1. Hi Cindy,
I actually sold this piece shortly after I finished it so while I can't speak to this specific one, I've sprayed countless pieces of hardware on pieces that I kept and it's always held up really well. If you're painting the brackets, those don't get that much wear so I wouldn't worry too much about those. As long as you give them a nice cleaning before you paint, they should be fine long term. But If after some time, the handles are getting a little worn, you could always freshen them up with another coat.

One thing I've noticed though with some metallic spray paint is that the dry time is a little longer. So be sure to let is dry throughly before handling them. Other than that, you probably can't go wrong!

      Hope that helps :-)
